Non‑Religious Reasons to Wait for Marriage to Have Sex

Many modern people think waiting for marriage is just an arbitrary standard pushed by older societies, but the truth is, there have always been good reasons for this standard. There are many non‑religious reasons to wait for marriage.

How can you expect strangers or people you don’t fully know to respect your privacy and well-being? This concern applies to things like one‑nightstands, not fully knowing your partner, and casual sex in general. If someone wants full intimacy but isn’t willing to truly know you, it shows they aren’t prepared for a real relationship or are using you as an object instead of a person with value. This isn’t always intentional; sometimes people don’t realise the impact of their actions.

A good way to express this idea is by comparing it to clothing. Clothes are often worn for privacy. Why? Because you don’t want strangers or people who aren’t close to see your body. You don’t know how they’ll react or what they’ll do with that information. The same point can be applied to sex, but the risk is greater because you’re sharing more of yourself. A desire to be loved without the process can make us deal with being used; this isn’t healthy.

Anyone can say they are committed, but the institution of marriage makes you less likely to be a target because it requires more commitment and responsibility. This decreases the chance of being used because bad actors prefer easier targets.

Another thing is that sex is ordered towards babies; marriage makes this easier to deal with because it’s more likely that you have the same plan with a serious partner. This also lowers the chances of crisis pregnancies and lowers the chance of being abandoned. Marriage is a good foundation for sex because even in a world with no‑fault divorce, you likely have a big commitment to each other,r which is the ideal foundation for a family.

This allows you to practise patience and sacrifice, which can be useful later on in life, such as when a partner gets an illness or when waiting after birth, and it can also be a way of honouring your spouse by showing that you waited to give yourself to them.

The biggest reason is often the emotional connection. This happens because when you engage in intercourse, the body releases hormones like oxytocin, which is a natural way humans bond. This isn’t bad in itself, but it can make people who aren’t married find it hard to tell how they really feel about someone and can make them feel closer than they actually are, which can mask potential problems.

A sexual union is an emotional way to show that the other partner is lovable, vulnerable and irreplaceable. This is why it hurts when people commit adultery, because we are not the same as many animals, even if we may be biologically similar.

Having sex while unmarried can lead to a higher chance of STDs if you have multiple sexual partners, and it can lead to a higher chance of crisis pregnancies, which in many cases people try to solve with abortion. Even though many women who are pro‑choice still find it emotionally difficult. Lastly, it can also lead to a higher chance of separation within the family due to a lack of foundation.

Divorce rates are high – Divorce usually stems from poor communication, financial stress, lack of forgiveness or rushing into relationships too quickly, not marriage itself. Marriage works when both partners commit to honesty, compromise, and growth.

Sex is pleasurable / Craving Intimacy – It’s true that people naturally want pleasure and intimacy; that’s simply part of human nature. But acting on those feelings without proper commitment, as mentioned earlier, can cause many issues, including less compassionate and meaningful intimacy over time. Another thing to keep in mind is that there are healthy ways to deal with strong sexual emotions and hormones without being sexual, which is why many people live content single lives.

Already had sex outside of marriage before – Past choices don’t erase the benefits of setting new boundaries. Nothing is wrong about setting new boundaries.

It’s not hurting/affecting anyone – Our choices almost always affect more than we realise, such as passing and contracting STDs, having children in an unstable family, killing children through abortion, or even feeling used.

Waiting for marriage isn’t just an old, arbitrary rule but about protecting your well-being, privacy, and long-term stability. When intimacy is grounded in formal commitment, it becomes safer, healthier and far more meaningful than casual sexual relationships. The exceptions don’t change the rule.
